September 15th: Happy 28th Birthday to me! This evening we will depart from the United States to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
September 16th: Welcome to Rio! After gathering our luggage, we will meet our guide and transfer to the hotel for check-in. Following a welcome breakfast at the hotel (served till 10:30 am), we will depart from the hotel with our guide for a half day Favela Tour (3 hours).
Hotel: Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana, check it out here
Room Type: Fairmont Room (City view - 2 beds or 1 King bed)
During the Favela tour, we will experience the lifestyle of around 20% of the population of Río de Janeiro, giving us a totally different perspective of the city, its contrasts, and paradoxes. We will begin by visiting the community of Vila Canoas, where about 2,500 people live; here we will take a walking tour through its narrow alleys and we will have a good and clear idea of its initiatives that it shares with many other shantytowns. Later we will get to know Rocinha, the largest shantytown in Brazil, with approximately 85,000 inhabitants. We will get to see the breathtaking view from the top, which will turn this tour into an unforgettable experience. After this tour, we will return to our hotel.
Later that evening, we will enjoy a welcome dinner at Marius Degustare - a local seafood restaurant.
Meals included: Breakfast and dinner
September 17th: After breakfast, we will depart from our hotel for a full day excursion (8 hours). We will head to the Cosme Velho Station to board a cog-train for the ride through Tijuca Forest up Corcovado Mountain. The train ride takes 20 minutes and is a wonderful opportunity for a closer look at the lush tropical vegetation of the forest and to enjoy scenic landscapes of the beaches and city. Once we get to the top of Corcovado Mountain, we will follow the steps that lead to the top - the lookout where the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer stands. After appreciating the breathtaking view unfolding below, we will descend by train and proceed to the Urca District to board a cable car for a two-staged ascent up Sugar Loaf Mountain.
After this tour, we will have lunch and return to our hotel for Covid-19 PCR testing.
Later this evening, we will enjoy a churrascaria dinner at Confeitaria Colombo.
A churrascaria is a place where meat is cooked in churrasco style, which translates roughly from the Portuguese word for 'barbecue'. Passadores (meat waiters) come to the table with knives and a skewer, on which are speared various kinds of meat – beef, pork, chicken, duck, ham, or any other sort of local meats. Enjoy an unlimited meat dinner, along with a salad buffet and a dessert of fresh fruit and ice cream.
Later that night, we will have a beach party.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
September 18th: After breakfast, we will embark on a half day tour (4 hours). We will head to the Botanical Garden with its 137 hectares and has vegetation like the Atlantic Forest. After that, we will go to Parque Lage. Before traveling back to the hotel, we will stop for lunch stop at a local restaurant.
The rest of the evening will be spent at leisure. Later that night, we will explore Brazil's night life in Lapa.
September 19th: After breakfast, we will depart for a half day excursion (5 hours) to Pedro do Telegrafo. If you've read about Rio de Janeiro and use social media, you have probably seen a photograph where hikers appear to be dangerously hanging off a rock ledge into what looks like an enormous drop below. Luckily, the drop is actually very small and the dangerous looks are all about perspectives. The hike itself takes around 2 hours roundtrip and it’s not too hard. Before traveling back to the hotel, we will stop for lunch.
The rest of the evening will be spent at leisure.
Later that night, we will continue to expore Brazil's night life.
